Burn down the mission

If you want to stay alive...The Queensland Indigenous Community, and those in solidarity with them, gathered outside the Brisbane Parliament recently to mark the anniversary of the death in police custody of Cameron Doomadgee. His death last year sparked an uprising in the Palm Island community during which the police headquarters was burnt to the ground. A local indigenous spokeswoman at the rally, Aunty Jean, called for the re-invigoration of the black power movement, and also for help from the white community to fight back against the neglect of the Queensland government. Meanwhile, non Indigenous people concerned about the injustices experienced by the Indigenous peoples of Australia are also struggling with the issues.

"What does it mean to be a non-Indigenous person living on stolen land? What do the issues of attempted genocide, sovereignty and treaty mean for the Indigenous peoples of this continent? What can non-Indigenous people do to end our occupation of their lands? These are burning questions that I feel need to be addressed, if we are to end racism and work towards justice for Indigenous peoples." Full Story
